It is the second smallest township in the county, after Jiji Township. Name and etymologyThe name Mingjian originates from a Japanese transliteration of the original Taiwanese Hokkien name, Làm-á ({{zh|c=湳仔|p=Nǎnzǎi}}), with literal meaning "a very wet place".[2] In 1920, during Japanese rule, the name was changed to {{nihongo||名間|Nama}} which closely matched the Taiwanese pronunciation but with different kanji (Chinese characters) for the name. This written form was retained after the Kuomintang takeover of Taiwan in 1945; the characters are pronounced Bêng-kan and Míngjiān in Taiwanese and Mandarin Chinese, respectively. HistoryMingjian was a hunting ground for the Taiwanese aborigines.[2] In 2008, the 100th congregation of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Taiwan was organized in Mingjian.[3] A leaning unused electrical pylon damaged in the 1999 Jiji earthquake, has been turned into an earthquake memorial.[4] Administrative divisionsMingjian includes the villages of Buxia ({{lang|zh|廍下}}), Chishui ({{lang|zh|赤水}}), Dakeng ({{lang|zh|大坑}}), Dazhuang ({{lang|zh|大庄}}), Donghu ({{lang|zh|東湖}}), Kanjiao ({{lang|zh|崁腳}}), Nanya ({{lang|zh|南雅}}), Puzhong ({{lang|zh|埔中}}), Renhe ({{lang|zh|仁和}}), Sanlun ({{lang|zh|三崙}}), Songbo ({{lang|zh|松柏}}), Songshan ({{lang|zh|松山}}), Tanliao ({{lang|zh|炭寮}}), Tianzi ({{lang|zh|田仔}}), Wandan ({{lang|zh|萬丹}}), Xincuo ({{lang|zh|新厝}}) Xinguang ({{lang|zh|新光}}), Xinjie ({{lang|zh|新街}}), Xinmin ({{lang|zh|新民}}), Zhongshan ({{lang|zh|中山}}), Zhongzheng ({{lang|zh|中正}}), Zhuoshui ({{lang|zh|濁水}}), Zhuwei ({{lang|zh|竹圍}}).
