The office was created in July 1777 and is headquartered in Rockville, Maryland. It was nationally accredited in 1995, the first county sheriff's office in Maryland to be so. The office is headed by a sheriff; the current sheriff is Darren M. Popkin.

Duties

The duties of the MCSO are as follows:[3]

  • Courthouse security[4]
  • Criminal warrant service[5]
  • Prisoner Transportation and Extraditions
  • Domestic Violence Intervention
  • Canine Unit
  • Special Response Team (SRT)[6]
  • Criminal and Civil Court Order Service
  • Child support enforcement
  • Eviction Unit[7]
  • Fugitive Task-Force
  • School Resource Deputies
  • Other duties as assigned

History

1770s

Created in July 1777,[8] the MCSO is the oldest law enforcement agency in Montgomery County.[9]

1920s

In July 1924, William L. Aud, a former Montgomery County sheriff, became the Montgomery County police chief.[10]

1930s

In February 1939, Charles M. Orme, who was a Montgomery County Sheriff's Office deputy from 1925 to 1939, became the Montgomery County police chief.[11]

1990s

The MCSO was accredited in 1995; the first county sheriff's office in Maryland to be. It advertises this fact through stickers affixed to the quarter panels of its vehicles.

2010s

In December 2010, the MCSO's longest-serving sheriff,[12] Raymond M. Kight, retired.

Organization

The MCSO has authorized over 165 employees consisting of sworn law enforcement officers and civilian support staff.[13]

Headquarters

The office is headquartered in Room T400 of the Montgomery County Judicial Center at 50 Maryland Avenue in Rockville, Maryland.[14]

Sheriff

The office is headed by the sheriff, who has been elected every four years since the 1920s. The sheriff currently is Darren M. Popkin, a Democrat.[15] Popkin succeeded Raymond M. Kight as sheriff,[16] who retired in December 2010.[17] Popkin's current term ends in 2018,[18] when he will be eligible for reelection.[19]
