The American British Academy (later renamed ABA - An IB World School, or simply ABA), established in September 1987, is an international school in the Persian Gulf region. Located in the city of Muscat, Oman, it is a private, non-profit, co-educational day school that offers a K-12 English-language curriculum to expatriate students in Muscat.

Its first chairman of the board was the father of actor-producer Stegath Dorr. Other notable former pupils include Myanna Buring, also an actress.

Overview

Curriculum

The ABA is fully accredited by both the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools and the European Council of International Schools. The ABA is also an "IB World School", authorized to offer the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program (grades 1-5), the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program (grades 6-10), and the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program (grades 11-12).

Throughout the four years of high school (Grades 9-12), all students at ABA work towards the ABA Diploma, a US high school diploma that certifies successful completion of at least 25 credits of university-preparatory coursework. In addition, standard coursework in Grades 9 and 10 prepares students for optional examinations in the International General Certificate of Secondary Education system (www.cie.org.uk). In Grades 11 and 12, all courses follow the syllabi of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program with the option of pursuing the IB Diploma (www.ibo.org).

Faculty

The ABA draws teachers from more than 20 nations to provide a supportive international learning environment for students. Most teachers come from New Zealand, Pakistan, Australia and United Kingdom, but educators from Canada, the United States as well as from regions in South America, the Middle East, Asia, and Eastern Europe form a sizable contingent, and all contribute to the international character of the school. All teachers at ABA hold at least a bachelor's degree and 48% achieved a master's degree.

Students

The ABA community consists of 1056 students, with the school promoting respect for and understanding of cultural diversity. The students themselves come from various countries over the world. More than 70 different countries are represented.

Activities

The ABA cooperates with schools across the Persian Gulf and South East Asia for sports, art, and other creative activities. ABA has hosted various sporting, artistic, and academic tournaments in the Persian Gulf and Mediterranean Sea, and is a member of the Middle East South Asia Conference. It used to be a member of the Eastern Mediterranean Activities Conference (EMAC), until that conference shut down in 2011.

It now has an Android Application to spread knowledge worldwide.

Notable Alumni

  • Skye Kakoschke-Moore, Australian Senator from 2016–present.
