In 2006, Benedict XVI renounced the title of "Patriarch of the West" (Patriarcha Occidentis).[2] TitularThe following patriarchs in the Latin Church are titular – that is, they have the title of patriarch for various historical reasons, but are not to be considered the same as the patriarchs and major archbishops who are heads of Churches sui iuris.
