In 2009 the national Comprehensive Rural Development Programme (CRDP) identified Muyexe as one of the poorest villages in South Africa, noting that it lacked basic services such as water, electricity, proper roads, or adequate housing. The CRDP promised to help the local farmers farm more productively by providing tractors and other agricultural equipment. The Minister for Rural Development and Land Reform, Gugile Nkwinti, his Deputy, Dr Joe Phaahla, and the Limpopo Premier, Cassel Mathale, promised to visit the village from time to time to supervise the work and make sure that community members were getting better services.[2] In 2011, the CRDP declared the project at Muyexe to be a success, with the majority of the needs of the 900 households in the village having been met.[3] However, as of 2011 adequate water remained a serious problem as there was no permanent water supply, no tractor yet had been supplied, and jobs remained scarce.[4] By 2013, despite equipping boreholes with pumps and installing a water purification plant,[5][6] residents still did not have access to piped water, and poverty and unemployment remained major problems.[7] In 2013, President Jacob Zuma promised that a pipeline from the Nsami dam on the Groot Letaba River would bring water to the village.[8] References1. ^1 2 3 {{cite web |url=http://census2011.adrianfrith.com/place/960007 |title = Main Place Muyexe |work=Census 2011}} {{Mopani District Municipality}}2. ^{{Cite web|url=http://www.zoutnet.co.za/details/05-06-2009/muyexe_declared_the_poorest_village_in_south_africa/7397 |title=Muyexe declared the poorest village in South Africa|publisher=Zoutnet|date=5 June 2009|archiveurl=https://www.webcitation.org/6QvjDoj4T|archivedate= 9 July 2014|deadurl=no}} 3. ^{{Cite journal|title=Muyexe: poverty-stricken village transformed |date=18 February 2011|journal=Limpopo News|page=4|publisher=Limpopo Provincial Government|url=http://www.limpopo.gov.za/Publications/General/newsletter/2011/Limpopo_news_16_pages.pdf|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20120122091028/http://www.limpopo.gov.za/Publications/General/newsletter/2011/Limpopo_news_16_pages.pdf|archivedate=22 January 2012|deadurl=no}} 4. ^{{Cite web|title=Muyexe develops, but Canaan is still miles away|publisher=Zoutnet|date=12 August 2011|url=http://www.zoutnet.co.za/details/12-08-2011/muyexe_develops_but_canaan_is_still_miles_away/9375|archiveurl=https://www.webcitation.org/6QvkGngYB|archivedate= 9 July 2014|deadurl=no}} 5. ^{{Cite web|title=Zuma pays a visit to Muyexe village|date=26 June 2013|publisher=South Africa Info|url=http://www.southafrica.info/about/social/rural-260613.htm|archiveurl=https://www.webcitation.org/6Qvl93yl7|archivedate=9 July 2014|deadurl=no}} 6. ^The water from the boreholes was high in nitrates, way in excessive of drinking water standards, and the levels of fluoride, magnesium and chloride also exceeded those standards. {{Cite web|title=Muyexe village water purification|publisher=Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA)|url=http://www.dbsa.org/EN/DBSA-Operations/Proj/Pages/Muyexe-village-water-purification.aspx|archiveurl=https://www.webcitation.org/6Qvm6Ge2S|archivedate=9 July 2014|deadurl=no}} 7. ^{{Cite news|title=Zuma’s Muyexe project a failure: DA|date=25 June 2013|newspaper=The Independent Online (IOL)|location=South Africa|url=http://www.iol.co.za/news/politics/zuma-s-muyexe-project-a-failure-da-1.1537480|archiveurl=https://www.webcitation.org/6QvlUwmiP|archivedate=9 July 2014|deadurl=no}} 8. ^{{Cite news|title=President visits Muyexe|date=29 June 2013|newspaper=Bulletin|location=Tzaneen.
