}}Nanyang Business School (NBS) is the business school of Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (NTU). Singapore's oldest business school, NBS was established in 1956 at the then Nanyang University, which was subsequently absorbed by the National University of Singapore (NUS) in 1980 before it finally moved to NTU in 1987. It is also the largest business school in Singapore with over 6,800 students pursuing undergraduate, postgraduate and executive programmes.[1][2]

History

  • 1956: Bachelor of Commerce (Accountancy) is first offered at Nanyang University, a year after the Chinese-language university was founded.
  • 1980: Nanyang University merges with the University of Singapore to form the National University of Singapore (NUS).
  • 1981: Nanyang Technological Institute (NTI) is established with a charter to train three-quarters of Singapore's engineers.
  • 1987: The accountancy programme at NUS moves over to NTI, and the School of Accountancy (SOA) is established.
  • 1989: SOA admits its first batch of undergraduates for the Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com) degree and is renamed the School of Accountancy and Commerce (SAC).
  • 1990: The school is renamed the School of Accountancy and Business (SAB), as business specialisations such as Actuarial Science, Banking, Marketing and Human Resource Management are introduced.
  • 1991: Nanyang Technological Institute becomes a full-fledged university, under the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) Act.[3] The Nanyang MBA programme is launched in that same year. The Bachelor of Commerce degree is renamed as the Bachelor of Business degree.
  • 1995: School of Accountancy and Business is renamed as the Nanyang Business School.
  • 2004: Nanyang Business School is conferred the EQUIS (European Quality Improvement System) accreditation.
  • 2005: Nanyang Business School is awarded the AACSB (Association of Advance Collegiate School of Business) accreditation.[4]

Academia & Accreditations

Nanyang Business School is the first business school in Singapore, and the third in Asia, to be accredited by both the European Quality Improvement System and Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. It is also one of only 11 business schools outside of the US to be accredited with the AACSB in Accounting.

Undergraduate Programs

The school offers 3-year direct honours single degree programmes. NBS' double degree programmes and the integrated Bachelor/Master's programme can be completed within 3.5 to 4 years. As part of the degree requirements, all undergraduates will have to complete a professional internship.

Campus

NBS is located within the campus of the Nanyang Technological University along with several other schools, colleges, and residential buildings of the university. NBS also includes an e-commerce laboratory and financial trading rooms.{{Citation needed|date=January 2019}} In 2014, NBS launched the 165-square meter Centre for Applied Financial Education, the largest finance lab in Singapore. The new lab is equipped with 60 dedicated Thomson Reuters Eikon terminals with Datastream, along with 24 Bloomberg terminals that will allow business school students to access all kinds of real-time financial, economic and business news information.[5]

Faculty

Nanyang Business School has more than 160 professors from more than 20 countries, proficient in 30 languages holding doctorates from the most renowned universities in the world. This makes NBS one of the largest business schools in the world in terms of faculty strength.[6][7]

The faculty is organised into six academic divisions, though several possess research interests that span more than one division.

The divisions are:

  • Accounting
  • Banking & Finance
  • Business Law
  • Information Technology & Operations Management
  • Marketing & International Business
  • Strategy, Management & Organisation

Professor Vijay Sethi (Information Technology & Operations Management) was awarded World’s Best Business Professor by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) [8]

in 2013. His work is focused on digital disruptions, the economics of technology, social media and networks, data analytics, legal and IPR issues, and patterns of new technology evolution.

Professor Tan Hun-Tong is the world's No.1 accounting researcher[9] according to the Brigham Young University (BYU) Accounting Research Rankings. NBS is ranked joint 7th in the world with MIT and is top in Singapore for accounting research.[10]
