Kim Il-sung died in office and was named the Eternal President of the Republic. Thus, his son and successor as leader Kim Jong-il was never given the title of President, even after his death on December 17, 2011. Additionally, Il-sung's grandson and Jong-il's son and successor Kim Jong-un has also never been given the title of President. After Kim Il-sung's death (Jul 8, 1994), the presidency was not reassigned. The functions of head of state were resumed by the President of the Presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly and this was ratified by the 1998 constitution. Supreme Leader of North Korea (2009-)
