It connects Yangon to Meiktila where it joins the National Highway 4 going east and then NR1 continues north to Mandalay. The highway begins in western Yangon at Pyay Road {{coord|16|47|35|N|96|7|51|E|}} and then continues north to Meiktila where it joins the National Highway 4 at approximately {{coord|20|52|22|N|95|52|59|E|}}.
