It is the oldest continuously running hospital in the Navy medical system.[6] HistoryThe historic Portsmouth Naval Hospital building was designed by architect John Haviland (1792–1852) and built in 1827. It is a three-story granite and Freestone building on a {{convert|12|ft|adj=on}} basement. Its form is that of a hollow square, measuring {{convert|172|ft}} wide by {{convert|192|ft}} deep. The front facade features a {{convert|92|ft}} wide Doric order portico with 10 columns. The building's interior was reconstructed in 1907, and a shallow dome was added to the roof. Located on the property are a contributing marker erected by Haviland over the grave of Major Saunders, one time commander of Forts Nelson and Norfolk, who died March 15, 1810; and a memorial cannon commemorating Fort Nelson.[7] The hospital staff has a long tradition of providing service to the fleet. In the summer of 1832 during a massive cholera outbreak naval doctors, nurses, and attendants remained on duty caring for patients throughout the epidemic and worked heroically to check the ravages of the disease and allayed people’s fears.[8] GalleryReferences1. ^1 {{cite web|url=http://www.med.navy.mil/sites/nmcp/SitePages/home.aspx |title=Naval Medical Center Portsmouth |date= |accessdate=2013-11-05}} 2. ^{{cite web|title=Virginia Landmarks Register|url=http://www.dhr.virginia.gov/registers/register_counties_cities.htm|publisher=Virginia Department of Historic Resources|accessdate=19 March 2013}} 3. ^{{NRISref|version=2010a}} 4. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.med.navy.mil/sites/NMCP2/OurHistory/Documents/NMCPHistory.pdf |title=History Page |format=PDF |date= |accessdate=2013-11-05}} 5. ^{{cite web|url=https://pilotonline.com/life/holidays/article_eae5349c-1f9e-5ce2-bdb7-78ee8f5090a3.html|title=Stories march through doors of 1827 Naval Medical Center|publisher=pilotonline.com|date=26 October 2008|accessdate=25 January 2018}} 6. ^{{cite book | last = Yarsinske | first = Amy Waters | title = The Elizabeth River | publisher = History Press | location = Charleston, SC | year = 2007 | page = 153 | url = http://www.amywatersyarsinske.com/books/elizabeth_river.htm | isbn = 978-1-59629-207-9}} 7. ^{{cite web |url=http://www.dhr.virginia.gov/registers/Cities/Portsmouth/124-0036_Portsmouth_Naval_Hospital_1972_Final_Nomination.pdf |title=National Register of Historic Places Inventory/Nomination: Portsmouth Naval Hospital |author=Virginia Historic Landmarks Commission Staff |date=June 1973|publisher=Virginia Department of Historic Resources}} and Accompanying photo 8. ^Sharp, John G.
