It was established in 1976 with P.G. Kostyuk, R. Llinás, and A.D. Smith as founding editors-in-chief and originally published by Pergamon Press.[1][1] The current editor-in-chief is Juan Lerma Gómez (Miguel Hernández University of Elche). The journal is published by Elsevier under the editorial direction of the International Brain Research Organization.
