HistoryAt the election, "the Liberals, with over twenty candidates, collected only 1 per cent of the vote, although they caused the National Party a little concern by drawing financial support from some farmers in Canterbury."[1] The Liberal Party argued the National government was not doing enough to promote private enterprise, but made little influence on the election and did not fulfill expectations that they would split the National Party's vote.[2] The number of candidates put forward was 23, and they attracted 10,339 votes (0.9%). The electorates were: {{NZ electorate link|Auckland Central}}, {{NZ electorate link|Awarua}}, {{NZ electorate link|Eastern Maori}}, {{NZ electorate link|Eden}}, {{NZ electorate link|Hamilton}}, {{NZ electorate link|Hauraki}}, {{NZ electorate link|Invercargill}}, {{NZ electorate link|Mount Albert}}, {{NZ electorate link|North Shore}}, {{NZ electorate link|Onehunga}}, {{NZ electorate link|Otaki}}, {{NZ electorate link|Palmerston North}}, {{NZ electorate link|Piako}}, {{NZ electorate link|Raglan}}, {{NZ electorate link|Remuera}}, {{NZ electorate link|Roskill}}, {{NZ electorate link|Selwyn}}, {{NZ electorate link|Tamaki}}, {{NZ electorate link|Waimarino}}, {{NZ electorate link|Waipa}}, {{NZ electorate link|Waitakere}}, {{NZ electorate link|Waitomo}} and {{NZ electorate link|Wallace}}. The highest number of votes for any Liberal candidate was Invercargill (1,064 votes), then Wallace (828 votes). Invercargill was contested by the party leader Ronald MacGregor Hutton-Potts.[3] References1. ^{{cite book |first = Robert Stephen |last = Milne |title = Political Parties in New Zealand |place = Oxford, England |publisher = Clarendon Press |year = 1966 |pages = 66–67}} {{Historic New Zealand political parties}}2. ^{{cite book |ref = harv |last = Gustafson |first = Barry |authorlink = Barry Gustafson |title = The First 50 Years : A History of the New Zealand National Party |year = 1986 |publisher = Reed Methuen |location = Auckland |isbn = 0-474-00177-6 |page=90 }} 3. ^{{cite book |last= Norton |first= Clifford |title= New Zealand Parliamentary Election Results 1946-1987: Occasional Publications No 1, Department of Political Science |accessdate= |edition= |origyear= |year= 1988 |publisher= Victoria University of Wellington |location= Wellington |isbn= 0-475-11200-8 |oclc= |page= |pages= }} 5 : Political parties established in 1962|1962 establishments in New Zealand|Defunct political parties in New Zealand|Political parties with year of disestablishment missing|Liberal parties in New Zealand |
