Sikh Prayers

The sikhs believe in sleeping very early then waking up early. The sikhs call early morning as Amrit wela. Most of the sikhs (especially baptised) wake up at this time of day and pray

Morning prayers

In the morning most of the sikhs recite the path by sitting in their family or sitting alone. They recite 5 paths (holy chapters) as directed by the tenth guru of sikhs Sri Guru Gobind Singh.

The list of 5 paths is:

1. Japji Sahib

2. Jaap Sahib

3. Twe Prasad Swaiye

4. Chaupai Sahib

5. Anand Sahib.(Refer android or apple app Sunder Gutka for more details)

They try to perform these prayers on daily basis.

Evening Prayers

In the evening the sikhs perform the path of Rehraas Sahib.

Night Prayers

During night time the sikhs recite Kirtan Sohila before sleeping.

Though the sikhs pray these special prayers they are always in touch with their God by reciting Waheguru-waheguru for the whole day, follow the orders of their Guru Nanak Dev ji to do work but keep their attention towards God.

Islamic prayers

The English term "prayer" can refer to any of three separate concepts in Islamic spiritual practice:

  • Salat, ritual Islamic prayer, prescribed five times daily:
    • Fajr – the dawn prayer. It is two rakat Salat.
    • Dhuhr – the early afternoon prayer. It is four rakat Salat.
    • Asr – the late afternoon prayer. It is four rakat Salat.
    • Maghrib – the sunset prayer. It is three rakat Salat.
    • Isha'a – the night prayer. It is four rakat Salat.

Besides the five daily prayers, other notable forms of salat include:

  • Jumu'ah – weekly congregational prayer (replaces dhuhr on Fridays)
  • Mustahab / Nafilah Salaat - There are many Mustahab prayers which are generally called Nafilah, but more stress has been laid on the daily Mustahab prayers.
    • 2 Rak'ats Nafilah for Fajr. (The Fajr Nafilah is offered before Fajr prayers.)
    • 8 Rak'ats Nafilah for Zuhr. (The Zuhr Nafilah is offered before Zuhr prayers.)
    • 8 Rak'ats Nafilah for Asr. (The Asr Nafilah are offered before Asr prayers.)
    • 4 Rak'ats Nafilah for Maghrib. (The Maghrib Nafilah should be offered after Maghrib prayers.)
    • 2 Rak'ats Nafilah for Isha. (The time for Isha Nafilah is from the completion of Isha prayers till midnight. It is better to offer it immediately, after Isha prayers.)
  • Salaat al-Layl - The time for praying Salatul-Layl is from midnight (midnight is reckoned as the time which is exactly half the time between sunset and the actual dawn) to the time of Adhan for Fajr prayer. Salatul-Layl is made up of Eleven Rak’ats
    • The first eight Rak’ats are prayed as normal in pairs of two Rak’ats each with the niyyah of Nawafilatul-Layl.
    • The two Rak’ats are prayed with the Niyyah of 'Salatul Shaf’a'.
    • The remaining one Rak’at is prayed (as below) with the Niyyah of 'Salatul Witr.'
  • Salat of Ja’far e Tayyar (as) - The best time to perform it is on Friday before noon. It is four rakat Salat, divided into two parts 2 x 2 rakat.
  • Salaat -e-Gufaila - Ghufayla prayers is one of the Mustahab prayers which is offered between Maghrib and Isha prayers.
  • Namaz/Salaat of Masoomeen(Ahlulbayt -as)
  • Eid salah – performed during the two primary Islamic festivals, Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha
  • Tarawih – lengthy night-time prayers during Ramadan
  • Dua, or "supplication"
  • Dhikr, or "remembrance of God", often involving various repeated phrases, most notably:
    • Subhanallah
    • Alhamdulillah
    • Allahu akbar – see takbir
    • La ilaha ill Allah – see Six Kalimas
    • Astaghfirullah
