}}Nirmalya Kumar (born 8 March 1960) is Lee Kong Chian Professor of Marketing at Singapore Management University and a Distinguished Fellow at INSEAD Emerging Markets Institute.[1] He also served on many Boards of Directors of Indian firms including ACC Limited and Zensar Technologies.[2][3]

Kumar was educated at La Martiniere Calcutta school, and received his Bachelor of Commerce degree from Calcutta University in 1980, and his Master of Commerce degree from Shivaji University in 1983. In 1986, he completed his MBA at the University of Illinois at Chicago and in 1991, received his Ph.D in Marketing at the Kellogg School of Management in Northwestern University.

Career

Professor of Marketing at Lee Kong Chian School of Business, Singapore Management University and Distinguished Fellow at INSEAD Emerging Markets Institute. Between 2013 and 2016, Kumar was a member-group executive council and head of strategy at Tata Sons. He wrote a blog post on being fired from this role.[4] Before this, he was a Professor of Marketing and Director of Aditya Birla India Centre at London Business School.

He previously served on the faculty of Harvard Business School, IMD-International Institute for Management Development (Switzerland), and Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University.[5]

He has authored nine books, besides nine appearances in Harvard Business Review, on marketing and business-related topics. He is notable for proposing the culture of "3Vs": valued customer, value proposition and value network, explained in his book Marketing as Strategy: Understanding the CEO's Agenda for Driving Growth and Innovation.[6][7]

He has appeared on the lists of Thinkers50, World's Best B-School Professors, and 50 Most Influential Business School Professors. In 2011, he received the Global Village Award by Thinkers50 for the person who contributed most to the business community's understanding of globalization and the new frontiers established by emerging markets. In 2012, he received an honorary fellowship from School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) for his support of South Asian art. Following six Case Centre awards for best selling cases, in 2014, Kumar received their Outstanding Contribution to the Case Method Award. In 2017, he was inducted into the Thinkers50 Hall of Fame for making a lasting and vital impact on how organisations are led and managed.

Kumar has over the past 30 years amassed an important collection of paintings from Bengal 1900-1947, especially of the artists Hemendranath Mazumdar, Jamini Roy, and Rabindranath Tagore. Selections from his collection have been borrowed for exhibitions by Asia House London, Bauhaus Museum in Dessau Germany, Museo delle Culture Lugano in Switzerland, National Gallery Singapore, and Tate Britain.
