Most of the novel is set in the city of Barquisimeto, Venezuela. Plot{{lang|es|No me pidan que sonría}} tells the story of Renzo Dragotto, a young man who loses his mother, Eva Dragotto, at a very young age under strange circumstances. Unable to find happiness due to his mother's disappearance, Renzo's life is defined by an emotional, seemingly endless search for the truth.{{clarify|reason=Does his mother die or disappear?|date=April 2018}} As a teen, Renzo comes to meet Leonardo Bachcovsky, Dalver Bassán, and Víctor Guerra. With them, he develops a strong friendship, despite the stark differences among the four main characters. By the novel's end, everything seems to be falling into place for Renzo, now in his late teens, especially after he meets and finds true love with a young girl named Desiré.
