The team participated in NCAA Division I beginning with the 1990–91 season.[1] The squad briefly joined the East Coast Conference before moving to the Mid-Continent Conference from 1994–98. At the end of the 1997–98 academic year, the university's administration disbanded the athletic department.[2] Leading players of this era included high-scoring guard Reggie Smith (1991–94) and imposing center Monte O'Quinn (1992–96). Another guard, Andrell Hoard (1995–97), won the 1997 ESPN National Slam Dunk Championship.[3] Record by year{{incomplete list|date=March 2018}}{{CBB Yearly Record Start | type = team | conference = | postseason = | poll = both}}{{CBB Yearly Record Subhead | name = Rees Johnson | conference = Division II Independent | startyear = 1988 | endyear = 1990}}{{CBB Yearly Record Entry| championship = | season = 1988–89 | name = Rees Johnson | overall = 11–17 | conference = | confstanding = | postseason = — | ranking = no | ranking2 =no | bg_color= }}{{CBB Yearly Record Entry | championship = | season = 1989–90 | name = Rees Johnson | overall = 6–21[4] | conference = | confstanding = | postseason = — | ranking = no | ranking2 =no | bg_color= }}{{CBB Yearly Record Subhead | name = Rees Johnson | conference = Division I Independent | startyear = 1990 | endyear = 1993}}{{CBB Yearly Record Entry | championship = | season = 1990–91 | name = Rees Johnson | overall = 2–25[5] | conference = | confstanding = | postseason = — | ranking = no | ranking2 =no | bg_color= }}{{CBB Yearly Record Entry | championship = | season = 1991–92 | name = Rees Johnson | overall = 8–20[6] | conference = | confstanding = | postseason = — | ranking = no | ranking2 =no | bg_color= }}{{CBB Yearly Record Entry | championship = | season = 1992–93 | name = Rees Johnson | overall =11–16[7] | conference = | confstanding = | postseason = — | ranking = no | ranking2 =no | bg_color= }}{{CBB Yearly Record Subhead | name = Rees Johnson | conference = East Coast Conference | startyear = 1993 | endyear = 1994}}{{CBB Yearly Record Entry | championship = | season = 1993–94 | name = Rees Johnson | overall = 17–11[8] | conference = 4–1 | confstanding = 2nd | postseason = ECC Tournament Runners-Up | ranking = no | ranking2 =no | bg_color= }}{{CBB Yearly Record Subhead | name = Rees Johnson | conference = Mid-Continent Conference[9] | startyear = 1994 | endyear = 1998}}{{CBB Yearly Record Entry | championship = | season = 1994–95 | name = Rees Johnson | overall = 4–22[10] | conference = 2–16 | confstanding = 10th | postseason = — | ranking = no | ranking2 =no | bg_color= }}{{CBB Yearly Record Entry | championship = | season = 1995–96 | name = Rees Johnson | overall = 14–13[11] | conference =10–8 | confstanding = T–3rd | postseason = — | ranking = no | ranking2 =no | bg_color= }}{{CBB Yearly Record Entry | championship = | season = 1996–97 | name = Rees Johnson | overall = 16–12[12] | conference = 8–8 | confstanding = 5th | postseason = Mid-Con Tournament Semifinals | ranking = no | ranking2 =no | bg_color= }}{{CBB Yearly Record Entry | championship = | season = 1997–98 | name = Rees Johnson | overall = 6–19[13] | conference = 3–13 | confstanding = 8th | postseason = — | ranking = no | ranking2 =no | bg_color= }}{{CBB Yearly Record End|overall=95–176|conference=0-0 }} Conference tournament historyEast Coast Conference
