The first chairman was Herman Leopoldus Løvenskiold,^[1]^[2] and other founding members include C. S. Schilbred^[3] and Jørgen Mathiesen.^[4] The Norwegian Heraldry Society organizes lectures and publishes the members' magazine Våpenbrevet ("Letters Patent").^[1] It co-operates extensively with the Societas Heraldica Scandinavica.^[1]

In 2014, it co-organised the XXXI International Congress of Genealogical and Heraldic Sciences.^[5]
