The municipality covers an area of {{convert|7.85|km2|sqmi}}, and has a population of 855 (as at 2005). Nová Říše lies approximately {{convert|30|km|mi|0}} south of Jihlava and {{convert|134|km|mi|0|abbr=on}} south-east of Prague. The area has an old Norbertine monastery. Five members of the community were gassed to death by the Nazis in 1942.[1] Surviving monks were sentenced to prison and labour camps by the Communists in 1950. The buildings were given back to the Order after the fall of Communism in 1991.
