The department is responsible for protecting the health of all Oklahomans and providing other essential human services. The OSDH serves as the primary public health protection agency in the state. The department is led by a State Board of Health, composed of nine members appointed by the governor of Oklahoma with the approval of the Oklahoma Senate. The board in turn appoints the State Commissioner of Health, who serves as the executive officer of the department and is the lead public health authority in the state. The current Interim Commissioner of Health is Former Assistant Attorney General Tom Bates, who was appointed by the board on March 28, 2018. Bates was the fourth commissioner within the previous six months. Dr Terry Cline resigned as the 20th commissioner following a scandal where the Department of Health was found to be operating a multi-million dollar slush fund. His interim successor, former Finance Secretary Preston Doerflinger, resigned in February 2018 following domestic violence allegation from 2012 becoming public. Bates is replacing Acting Commissioner Brian Downs, the department's director of federal and state policy.[1] The Department was created in 1963 during the term of Governor Henry Bellmon. LeadershipThe Department is led by the Secretary of Health and Human Services and the Commissioner of Health. Under Governor of Oklahoma Mary Fallin, Dr. Terry Cline resigned in 2017 as both the Cabinet Secretary and the Commissioner of Health amid discoveries of money mismanagement. On March 28, 2018, former Assistant Attorney General Tom Bates was named Interim Commissioner by the Board of Health.[2] State Board of HealthThe State Board of Health is the governing body of the Health Department. The Board is composed of nine members appointed by the Governor of Oklahoma with the approval of the Oklahoma Senate. Each Board member serves a nine-year term.
