The flowers are produced in late spring with a deep maroon red colouring on 65 cm stems. The blooms are large, up to 12 cm in diameter and bear a boss of rich orange stamens. This peony was once included with the species P. mascula.[2] GeneticsThe Greek peony is an autotetraploid (4n=20) of which the diploid parent must have gone extinct.[3] References1. ^{{Cite journal | author = Bazos, I. | author2 = Delipetrou, P. | last-author-amp = yes | title = Paeonia parnassica | journal = The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species | volume = 2011 | page = e.T162095A5535177 | publisher = IUCN | date = 2011 | url = http://www.iucnredlist.org/details/162095/0 | doi = 10.2305/IUCN.UK.2011-1.RLTS.T162095A5535177.en | access-date = 15 January 2018}} {{Taxonbar|from=Q7124101}}{{Saxifragales-stub}}2. ^Peonies: The Imperial Flower by Jane Fearnley-Whittingstall {{ISBN|0-297-82424-4}} 3. ^{{cite journal|first1= Diane|last1= Ferguson|first2= Tao|last2= Sang|year= 2001|title= Speciation through homoploid hybridization between allotetraploids in peonies (Paeonia)|journal= Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America|volume= 98|issue= 7|pages= 3915–3919|url= http://www.pnas.org/content/98/7/3915.full.pdf|accessdate= 2016-04-30|doi=10.1073/pnas.061288698|pmid=11259655|pmc=31153}} 1 : Peonies |
