Since 2007, however, Karachi has largely overtaken Lahore in Urdu film productions. The word "Lollywood" was coined in the summer of 1989 in Glamour magazine, published from Karachi, by gossip columnist Saleem Nasir. History{{Expand section|date=September 2017}} Post-Independence and The Early Years (c. 1947 – c. 1958) Pakistan is currently the world's 5th largest producer of films.[2] In the early years of Independence, The industry began its days with no recognisable actors, artisans, directors, producers or technicians. It barely had four small film studios in the entire country, all of which were based in Lahore. Before independence, The country only had one feature film to its name, "Sheela" released in 1935. Twelve years later, only an additional 27 films had been made in Punjabi, and some 12 in other languages. By the 1940s, only about 6 films were being produced annually; rising to 20 by 1955; and then 40 by 1964. In 1965, the industry received its first big break, when films imported from Bollywood were banned, due to tensions of Indo-Pakistani War of 1965. Post-1965 saw a surge in production, which raised both the quality of films produced, and their audience numbers. It even gave way for the country to produce 80 films per year, rising to a peak of 100 films in 1977[3] made annually. Cinema venues also grew from 220 in 1948, to over 500 by 1971. By 1969, Pakistan had produced over 1,000 feature-length films.[4] Pakistan's first formal feature film was made in 1948, called "Teri Yaad", but its first proper success was "Do Ansoo" in 1950, which lasted 25 weeks at the box office, rendering it the first ever Urdu language film to celebrate a silver jubilee in the new Pakistani film industry.[5] Starring Santosh Kumar, Ajmal, Sabiha Khanum and Allauddin. It marked a directorial success for Anwar Kamal Pasha. The music was composed by Mubarak Ali, became an instant hit and Sheikh Lateef's Naubahar Films, as a result, got some recognition due to the film's success.[5] Noor Jehan became one of the first female directors of the Subcontinent. Her debut directorial venture, Chanway (1951), was considered a blockbuster hit.[6]Films{{main|List of Pakistani Punjabi-language films}}Pakistani Punjabi Lollywood films were most popular in 1960s considered as their golden age.
