It is found around the North, South and Stewart islands and occurs mainly in shallow waters (5–25 metres) in sand and mud off sandy ocean beaches.[2] Another geoduck species, Panopea smithae, is found in deeper New Zealand waters. Like other geoducks, P. zelandica burrows downwards in the mud and extends a siphon 30-45 centimetres up to the surface of the substrate. The siphon contains two tubes. Water is sucked down one tube, filtered for food and then expelled through the other. {{clearleft}}References1. ^{{cite book | last = Powell | first = Arthur | authorlink = Arthur William Baden Powell | title = New Zealand Mollusca | publisher = William Collins Publishers Ltd | year = 1979 | isbn = 0-00-216906-1 }} {{Taxonbar|from=Q7131461}}2. ^Deepwater (King) Clam fishery summary {{webarchive|url=https://web.archive.org/web/20081014101445/http://fpcs.fish.govt.nz/science/documents/Plenary/PZL_FINAL%2008.pdf |date=2008-10-14 }} - New Zealand Ministry of Fisheries. 4 : Hiatellidae|Bivalves of New Zealand|Bivalves described in 1835|Edible bivalves |
