Park Plaza Hotels & Resorts, formerly Park Plaza International Hotels, Inns and Resorts and commonly known as just Park Plaza, is a hotel chain which runs by several hotel groups as franchises. It was established in 1986 as a company and acquired by Olympus Real Estate in 1997. In year 2000, Carlson acquired the Park Plaza Hotels & Resorts as well as sister brand Park Inn. As of 2019, the brands were owned by Radisson Hotel Group (formerly Carlson Hotels). Carlson had franchised the brand Park Inn, for Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) markets, to Rezidor Hotel Group in 2002, which Rezidor became an associate company of Carlson Hotels in 2005. PPHE Hotel Group was also licensed to use Park Plaza brand, for Europe and the Middle East markets, since 2000. Some of the Park Plaza and Park Inn hotels in the United States, also operated by franchisees in the past.

History

Park Plaza International Hotels, Inns and Resorts was a hotel management company and brand, founded in 1986,[2][1] by Jonathan R. Read.[2]

Since 1994, Park Plaza International also licensed the Park Plaza brand to PPHE Hotel Group (formerly "Park Plaza Hotels Europe" and "Park Plaza Hotels Limited") for Belgium, The Netherlands, Luxembourg, the United Kingdom and Israel,[3]{{better source needed|date=January 2019}} and then the Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) markets since 2000.[3][7][4][9]

Park Plaza International was acquired by Olympus Hospitality Group,[10][5] a division of Olympus Real Estate in October 1997.[6] According to The Wall Street Journal, a new parent company of the Park Plaza hotel group, Park Hotels International LLC, was formed as part of the deal.[7] Park Plaza group, had another holding company Park Holdings LLC at that time.[5] Park Plaza International, at that time owned Park Plaza as well as Park Inn hotel chains.[7]

In June 1998, Park Plaza International,{{refn|The press release did not specify it was Park Plaza International Hotels, Inns and Resorts or another legal entity Park Plaza International, LLC.|group=nb}} backed by Olympus Real Estate, acquired the controlling stake of Australia-listed company Kemayan Hotels and Leisure (KHL), which the stake had increased from 13.1% to approx. 55% of the share capital.[8] KHL was renamed into Park Plaza Kemayan immediately.{{#tag:ref|The name of the company had changed many times over its company history,[9][10] full list of former names omitted .|group="nb"|name="Kemayan2"}} At that time, Park Plaza Kemayan operated 24 Park Plaza hotels in five countries, with offices in Malaysia, Indonesia, Australia, The Philippines, Hong Kong and South Korea.[8]

In January 1999, 6 new hotels in Wisconsin and Minnesota were announced as franchises, namely: Park Inn & Suites in Shakopee, Minnesota, Park Inn Virginia, Minnesota, Park Inn Wausau, Park Plaza Oshkosh, Park Plaza Paper Valley Hotel & Convention Center and Park Plaza Neenah. They were operated by 2 separate companies: Heyde Hospitality and Montclair Hotel Investors respectively.[11]

In July 1999, Park Plaza Worldwide, LLC{{sic}}, acquired 50% rights of the brand art'otel from Dirk Gadeke.[12][22] As of 2019, art'otel was owned by aforementioned PPHE Hotel Group instead. PPHE Hotel Group acquired art'otel brand in 2007, without disclosing the name of the seller.[13]

In mid-1999, it was reported that Park Plaza Worldwide formed another joint venture with J.E. Robert Companies (JER), with JER owned 80% stake of the JV.[22][25][14] In addition, JER had an option to acquire up to 35% of Park Plaza Worldwide.[15][16]

In July 1999, Paris Park Plaza Worldwide also announced the opening of Park Plaza Orleans Palace.[17] That hotel was acquired by the joint venture with JER, according to reports.[15][16][14]

In 2000, Carlson Companies, via Carlson Hotels (known as Radisson Hotel Group since 2018), acquired the Park Plaza Hotels & Resorts and sister brand Park Inn,[18]{{rp|93}} by forming a joint venture: Park Hospitality, with Olympus Hospitality Group.[19] Carlson and Olympus also formed a private equity fund Radisson–Olympus Capital Partners, to acquire hotels and convert them to use Carlson Hotels' Regent or Radisson brands.[19] The brand Regent was sold by Carlson in 2010, but rest of the brands of Radisson Hotel Group (former Carlson Hotels), were still the sister brands of Park Plaza as of 2019. In 2000, Olympus Hospitality Group also acquired another hotel chain Chalet Susse, and converting them to Fairfield Inn by Marriott, operated by competitor of Carlson, Marriott International.[20]

In 2000, the aforementioned Park Plaza Worldwide, chaired by Read, given PPHE Hotel Group a exclusive territorial rights for Park Plaza brand in Europe and the Middle East region.[21] According to the press release, Park Plaza Worldwide retained the role as franchiser, which owned the Park Plaza brand in Europe, The Middle East, Africa, Mexico, South America, Central America, Japan, India, Pakistan and certain parts of Asia, at that time.[21]

Park Plaza International LLC,{{sic}} also acquired another hotel brand Rockresorts in August 2000.[22] However, it was sold in the next year.[23]

Carlson acquired the remaining stake of Park Plaza and Park Inn brands, from Olympus Hospitality Group in 2003.[24] The rights to use the brands in the Asia Pacific, was also bought back from Park Plaza Kemayan in the same year.[24][25]

Sister brands

Park Plaza had sister brands such as Radisson Hotel Group's Radisson, Country Inn & Suites as well as Park Inn. Park Inn was acquired by Carlson Companies along with Park Plaza in 2000.

Park Inn by Radisson, formerly Park Inn[26] and Park Inn International, is a midscale group of hotels that had over 130 locations worldwide, as of December 31, 2012.[45] Notable locations include the tallest building in Berlin – Park Inn by Radisson Berlin Alexanderplatz.

According to the company itself, it was founded in 1986 in Arizona.[27]

Since 2003, some of the Park Inn hotels were operated by franchisee Rezidor Hotel Group,[28] an associate company of Carlson Companies from 2006 to 2010, and a subsidiary of Carlson, via their wholly owned division Carlson Hotels, from 2010 to 2016. Rezidor acquired the franchise rights of Park Inn brand for EMEA region from 2002.[29] Rezidor Hotel Group followed the parent company Radisson Hotel Group (former Carlson Hotels) to become part of HNA Group in 2016. HNA Group sold Radisson Hotel Group in 2018.
