The bridge connects Thanon Ratchadamnoen Nai (Inner Ratchadamnoen Road) with Thanon Ratchadamnoen Klang (Central Ratchadamnoen Road). Following the construction of Makkhawan Rangsan Bridge ({{lang-th|สะพานมัฆวานรังสรรค์}}; "Bridge by the God Indra") in 1809, the construction of Phan Phiphop Lila Bridge begun in 1902 by the royal command of King Chulalongkorn who desired to have an elegant bridge connected with the newly built Thanon Ratchadamnoen Nai. The construction was completed in 1906, King Chulalongkorn presided over the opening ceremony of the bridge on 15 November of the same year, at which the name "Phan Phiphop Lila" was also declared. The bridge was originally decorated with attractive wrought irons, but these irons were removed when Phra Pin-klao Bridge was built in 1973. The Sa-nga Phanit Co., Ltd. ({{lang-th|บริษัท สง่าพานิช จำกัด}}) was the main contractor for the Phan Phiphop Lila Bridge extension over Khlong Khu Mueang Doem {{ref label|reference_name_a|a|a}} to match the new Phra Pin-klao Bridge[1]. Phan Phiphop Lila Bridge has a sister bridge, Phan Fa Lilat Bridge ({{lang-th|สะพานผ่านฟ้าลีลาศ}}; "King's Cross Bridge"{{ref label|reference_name_b|b|b}}). Notes{{refbegin}}{{note label|reference_name_a|a|a}} The northern part of "Khlong Khu Mueang Doem" was formerly known as "Khlong Rongmai" (Thai: คลองโรงไหม). "Khlong Khu Mueang Doem" is also called popularly "Khlong Lord" (Thai: คลองหลอด).{{note label|reference_name_b|b|b}} Both the names "Phan Phiphop Lila" and "Phan Fa Lilat" mean a king's cross, king's walk or king's movement.
