It is shaped like a hoof, has a bitter taste, and in the wild grows on mulberry trees. The stem's color ranges from dark brown to black. In Korean traditional medicine, the mushroom is consumed in the form of hot tea. Early research has suggested that Phellinus linteus has anti-breast cancer activity.[1][2] A paper published by Harvard Medical School reported that Phellinus linteus is a promising anti-cancer agent, but that more research is required to understand the mechanisms behind its anti-cancer activity.[3] Nine compounds were isolated from the active ethylacetate fraction of the fruiting body and identified as protocatechuic acid, protocatechualdehyde, caffeic acid, ellagic acid, hispidin, davallialactone, hypholomine B, interfungins A and inoscavin A of which interfungins A is a potent inhibitor of protein glycation.[4] Extracts from fruit-bodies or mycelium of Phellinus linteus stimulate the hormonal and cell-mediated immune function, quench the inflammatory reactions caused by a variety of stimuli, and suppress tumor growth and metastasis.[5] References1. ^{{cite journal |vauthors=Lu TL, Huang GJ, Lu TJ, etal |title=Hispolon from Phellinus linteus has antiproliferative effects via MDM2-recruited ERK1/2 activity in breast and bladder cancer cells |journal=Food and Chemical Toxicology |volume=47 |issue=8 |pages=2013–21 |date=August 2009 |pmid=19477214 |doi=10.1016/j.fct.2009.05.023}} 2. ^{{cite journal |vauthors=Sliva D, Jedinak A, Kawasaki J, Harvey K, Slivova V |title=Phellinus linteus suppresses growth, angiogenesis and invasive behaviour of breast cancer cells through the inhibition of AKT signalling |journal=British Journal of Cancer |volume=98 |issue=8 |pages=1348–56 |date=April 2008 |pmid=18362935 |pmc=2361714 |doi=10.1038/sj.bjc.6604319}} 3. ^{{cite journal |doi=10.2174/092986708784534929 |vauthors=Zhu T, Kim SH, Chen CY |title=A medicinal mushroom: Phellinus linteus |journal=Current Medicinal Chemistry |volume=15 |issue=13 |pages=1330–5 |year=2008 |pmid=18537612 |url=http://www.bentham-direct.org/pages/content.php?CMC/2008/00000015/00000013/0009C.SGM}} 4. ^{{cite journal |doi=10.1248/bpb.31.1968 |vauthors=Lee YS, Kang YH, Jung JY, etal |title=Protein glycation inhibitors from the fruiting body of Phellinus linteus |journal=Biological & Pharmaceutical Bulletin |volume=31 |issue=10 |pages=1968–72 |date=October 2008 |pmid=18827365 |url=https://www.jstage.jst.go.jp/article/bpb/31/10/31_10_1968/_article}} 5. ^Zhu, Tongbo; Sung-Hoon Kim; Chang-Yan Chen."A Medicinal Mushroom: Phellinus Linteus".
