Pierre Ngaiohni (born 1956 Maré, Loyalty Islands, New Caledonia) is a New Caledonian politician. He is a pro-independence ethnic Kanak. Ngaiohni was elected Vice President of New Caledonia on June 15, 2009, replacing Déwé Gorodey.[1] Ngaiohni was succeeded by Gilbert Tyuienon in March 2011. Ngaiohni was elected Vice President five weeks after the 2009 New Caledonia legislative elections.[1] His election was the third attempt to choose a new Vice President. Ngaiohni's candidacy was successful because pro-independence parties were able to agree on one candidate.[1] Ngaiohni's election clears the way for the allocation of the other eleven government portfolios.[1] According to the 1998 Nouméa Accord, the Vice Presidency must be held by a pro-independence politician if the presidency is held by an anti-independence politician.[1] The current president is Philippe Gomès, a pro-France and anti-independence politician, who was elected on June 5, 2009, for a five-year term.[2] References1. ^1 2 3 4 {{cite news |first=|last=|title=Ngaiohni elected new New Caledonia vice president|url=http://www.rnzi.com/pages/news.php?op=read&id=47150 |work=Radio New Zealand International|publisher=|date=2009-06-15 |accessdate=2009-06-15}} 2. ^{{cite news |first=|last=|title=Gomes elected New Caledonia president for 5-year term|url=http://www.rnzi.com/pages/news.php?op=read&id=46992|work=Radio New Zealand International|publisher=|date=2009-06-07 |accessdate=2009-06-15}} External links
