It is located along the Wu River ({{lang|zh-Hans|武江}}), a tributary of the Bei River. {{As of|2006}} it had a population of 120,000 residing in an area of {{convert|268|km2|abbr=on}}.Pingshi was called Pingshi County ({{lang|zh-Hans|平石县}}, literally "flat rock county") during the Southern and Northern Dynasties (420{{ndash}}589).
