It is located about {{convert|6|km|mi|0}} from Edward Island Provincial Park, {{convert|13|km|mi|0}} from Sleeping Giant Provincial Park, {{convert|14|km|mi|0}} east of Silver Islet, Ontario, and {{convert|42|km|mi|0}} east of the city of Thunder Bay. The island and nature reserve take their name from the characteristic quartz and feldspar crystals, or porphyries found in the volcanic rocks. The entire {{convert|107|ha|acre|0|adj=on}} island constitutes the Porphyry Island Provincial Park or nature reserve.[3] Point Porphyry LighthouseThe federal government established a lighthouse at Point Porphyry in 1873. This is located at the southwestern tip of the island.[4] References1. ^Ontario Crown Land Use Policy Atlas 2. ^{{cite cgndb|id= FDOBX|title= Porphyry Island|accessdate=2011-09-07}} 3. ^{{cite web|url= http://www.ontarioparks.com/english/porp.html|title= Porphyry Island|publisher = Ontario Parks|date= 2002-11-12|accessdate= 2011-09-07}} 4. ^{{cite journal|last= Boegh|first= Beth|title= The Point Porphyry Light, Lake Superior : the Andrew Dick Diary and Reminiscences of Bob McKay from a Century of Lighthouse Keeping|journal= Papers and Records|volume= XXXIII|year= 2005|publisher= Thunder Bay Historical Museum Society|pages= 17–41}} Sources{{refbegin}}
