It has chemical formula {{carbon}}5{{hydrogen}}10{{oxygen}}5. It is a C'-2 carbon epimer of the sugar xylose. Lyxose occurs only rarely in nature, for example, as a component of bacterial glycolipids.[1] References1. ^Kay-Hooi Khoo et al., Chemistry of the Lyxose-Containing Mycobacteriophage Receptors of Mycobacterium phlei/Mycobacterium smegmatis, Biochemistry, 35 (36), 11812-11819, 1996.
