The house has been operating as a cooperative for over thirty years. It is situated two blocks north of Michigan State University's campus. Founding and historyBuilt by the former dean of MSU, Edward H. Rhyder, in a Tudor Revival-style, Raft Hill has changed hands many a time in the last ninety-plus years. It has served as the base of operations for the Green Earth Food Co-op (1972) as well as provided shelter for runaways (1970). While it served as a shelter, it adopted the moniker of The Raft, which would later inspire its current name of Raft Hill. Today, the house functions as a graduate student co-op and all house meals are vegetarian as established by the current constitution, although individual members can store and cook their own meat.
