He was the grandson of Sir William Arbuthnot, 1st Baronet and nephew of William H Spottiswoode. After being educated at Rugby School he spent an extended time in India on business and was a member of the Madras Legislative Council in 1891–1892. He worked for Arbuthnot & Co, a merchant bank based in Madras.[2] Arbuthnot played twice for the Kent cricket XI. His first-class debut came in 1881 and, after time in India, his second appearance was in 1890.[1][2] He played non first-class cricket for a range of teams, including MCC, Blackheath Cricket Club and Madras Cricket Club.[3] References1. ^1 Reginald Arbuthnot, CricInfo.
