Rice, who settled in the area in the 1850s, or for William S. Rice, who had a Donation Land Claim at the north end of Rice Valley at about the same time.[4] The two-mile long valley stretches south from the community of Rice Hill.[5] Southern Pacific Railroad (today Central Oregon and Pacific Railroad) has a station on its Siskiyou Line at the summit named Rice Hill.[4] Rice Hill post office was established in 1892, and soon renamed Ricehill.[4] The office closed in 1908.[4] The steep grade of Rice Hill, elevation {{convert|710|ft|m}}, was an obstacle for pioneer travelers and it also created problems for the construction of the railroad, as it rises {{convert|325|ft|m}} in {{convert|3|mi|km}}.[4][6][7] Rice Hill has complete tourist facilities, including a truck stop, motels, and restaurants.[8][9] It has long been a popular spot to stop for ice cream.[10][11] References1. ^{{cite web|url=http://geonames.usgs.gov|accessdate=2008-01-31|title=US Board on Geographic Names|publisher=United States Geological Survey|date=2007-10-25}} 2. ^{{cite gnis |id= 1158447 |name= Rice Hill |entrydate= November 28, 1980 |accessdate= 2011-01-09}} 3. ^{{cite book |title= Oregon Atlas & Gazetteer |edition= 7th |year= 2008 |publisher= DeLorme |location= Yarmouth, Maine |isbn= 0-89933-347-8 |page= 46}} 4. ^1 2 3 4 5 {{Cite OGN|7th|page=808}} 5. ^{{cite gnis |id= 1125975 |name= Rice Valley |entrydate= November 28, 1980 |accessdate= 2011-01-09}} 6. ^{{cite book |url= https://archive.org/details/oregonendoftrail00writrich |title= Oregon: End of the Trail |author= Writers' Program of the Work Projects Administration in the State of Oregon |series= American Guide Series |year= 1940 |publisher= Binfords & Mort |location= Portland, Oregon |page= 318 |oclc= 4874569}} 7. ^{{cite web |url= http://www.bentoncountymuseum.org/research/OR&CA_Railroad.cfm |title= The Oregon and California Railroad |last= Munford |first= Kenneth |year= 1978 |work= Horner Museum Tour Guide Series |publisher= Benton County Museum |accessdate= 2011-01-09 |deadurl= yes |archiveurl= https://web.archive.org/web/20120307104148/http://www.bentoncountymuseum.org/research/OR%26CA_Railroad.cfm |archivedate= 2012-03-07 |df= }} 8. ^{{cite book |url= https://books.google.com/books?id=4i1grNoMcWgC&dq=In+Search+of+Western+Oregon&printsec=frontcover&source=bl&ots=EqYsMxgjFV&sig=-LgVXTSELf6PF3blbmVNAxkDOnE&hl=en&ei=AgQvS-CDI42otgPR69C5BA&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=3&ved=0CBUQ6AEwAg#v=onepage&q=%22Rice%20Hill%22&f=false |title= In Search of Western Oregon |author= Friedman, Ralph |authorlink= Ralph Friedman |year= 1990 |edition= 2nd |page= 537 |publisher= The Caxton Printers, Ltd |location= Caldwell, Idaho |isbn= 0-87004-332-3}} 9. ^{{cite web |url= http://www.oregon.gov/ODOT/MCT/STOPS.shtml |title= Truck Stops on Major Routes |publisher= Oregon Department of Transportation |accessdate= 2011-01-09 |deadurl= yes |archiveurl= https://web.archive.org/web/20101023130432/http://www.oregon.gov/ODOT/MCT/STOPS.shtml |archivedate= 2010-10-23 |df= }} 10. ^{{cite news |url= http://blog.oregonlive.com/terryrichard/2009/06/next_time_ill_go_for_six_scoop.html |title= Next time I'll go for six scoops of Umpqua ice cream's Oregon's 150; here's to statehood |last= Richard |first= Terry |work= The Oregonian |date= June 20, 2009 |accessdate= 2011-01-09}} 11. ^{{cite news |url= https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=7PRVAAAAIBAJ&sjid=M-IDAAAAIBAJ&pg=6699,1754178&dq=rice-hill+ice-cream&hl=en |title= Oregon's Biggest Dipper |last= Thompson |first= John |date= June 7, 1983 |work= The Register-Guard |accessdate= 2011-01-09}} External links
