Born in Launceston, Tasmania, Holt was educated in Melbourne at Scotch College and the University of Melbourne.[1] He became a barrister in 1940. In 1945 he was elected to the Victorian Legislative Assembly as the Labor member for Portland.[2] He was defeated in 1947, but re-elected in 1950. He was Minister for Lands and Social Settlement from 1952-53.[2] In 1955 he transferred to federal politics, winning the Australian House of Representatives seat of Darebin. Just three years later, in 1958, he retired from politics. Holt died in 1985.[3] References1. ^1 2 {{Australian Dictionary of Biography |first=Robert |last=Murray |title=Holt, Robert Wilfred (Bob) (1913–1985) |id2=holt-robert-wilfred-bob-12651 |accessdate=31 May 2014}} {{s-start}}{{s-par|au-vic-la}}{{s-new|Electoral district}}{{s-ttl|title=Member for Portland|years=1945–1947}}{{s-aft|after=Harry Hedditch}}{{s-bef|before=Harry Hedditch}}{{s-ttl|title=Member for Portland|years=1950–1955}}{{s-aft|after=George Gibbs}}{{s-par|au}}{{succession box | title=Member for Darebin | before=Tom Andrews| after=Frank Courtnay| years=1955–1958}}{{s-end}}{{DEFAULTSORT:Holt, Robert}}{{Australia-Labor-representative-stub}}2. ^1 {{cite re-member |mid=1164 |name=Holt, Robert Wilfred}} 3. ^{{cite web|last=Carr|first=Adam|title=Australian Election Archive|work=Psephos, Adam Carr's Election Archive|url=http://psephos.adam-carr.net/countries/a/australia|year=2008|accessdate=2008-06-20}} 9 : Australian Labor Party members of the Parliament of Australia|Members of the Australian House of Representatives for Darebin|Members of the Australian House of Representatives|Members of the Victorian Legislative Assembly|1913 births|1985 deaths|Melbourne Law School alumni|People educated at Scotch College, Melbourne|20th-century Australian politicians |
