Born at Cowes, on the Isle of Wight,[1] he was educated in England before migrating to Australia in 1863.[1] He was a goldminer in New South Wales and then Queensland, and became a mine owner in Charters Towers. Sayers was elected in 1888 to the Legislative Assembly of Queensland as the member for Charters Towers, serving until 1893.[1] In 1906, he was elected to the Australian Senate as an Anti-Socialist Senator for Queensland, joining the Commonwealth Liberal Party in 1909. He was defeated in 1913. Sayers died in 1919[2] and was buried in Brisbane's Toowong Cemetery.[3][4] References1. ^1 2 {{cite web|title=Former Members|publisher=Parliament of Queensland|year=2015| url=http://www.parliament.qld.gov.au/members/former/bio?id=1180|accessdate= 10 January 2015}} {{s-start}}{{s-par|au-qld}}{{s-new|seat}}{{s-ttl|title=Member for Charters Towers|years=1888 – 1893|alongside=Arthur Rutledge}}{{s-aft|after=Anderson Dawson}}{{s-end}}{{DEFAULTSORT:Sayers, Robert}}{{Australia-politician-stub}}2. ^{{cite web|last=Carr|first=Adam|title=Australian Election Archive|work=Psephos, Adam Carr's Election Archive|url=http://psephos.adam-carr.net/countries/a/australia|year=2008|accessdate=2008-11-16}} 3. ^[https://online.brisbane.qld.gov.au/cemeteries/cemeteries_step3.jsp?mapdisplay=170314 Sayers Robert John] — Brisbane City Council Grave Location Search 4. ^{{cite news |url=http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article20363628 |title=Family Notices. |newspaper=The Brisbane Courier |date=13 May 1919 |accessdate=10 January 2015 |page=6 |publisher=National Library of Australia}} 7 : Free Trade Party members of the Parliament of Australia|Commonwealth Liberal Party members of the Parliament of Australia|Members of the Australian Senate for Queensland|Members of the Australian Senate|1845 births|1919 deaths|20th-century Australian politicians |
