She was the Scottish Liberal Democrats' Education Spokesperson. At the 2011 Scottish Parliament elections, she lost her seat to the SNP's Colin Keir who won with a majority of 2689.[1] As the Liberal Democrats failed to win any list seats on the Lothian Region list, Smith was not returned as an MSP.
