释义 |
BiographySmith studied medicine in his native Dublin, receiving his Licentiate of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in 1832. He received his MD from Trinity College, Dublin in 1842, and became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in 1844. He became the first Professor of Surgery at Trinity College in 1847,[3] and a member of the Royal Irish Academy in 1849. He worked as surgeon to the Hospital for the Mentally Ill, Sir Patrick Dun's Hospital and Richmond Hospital, Dublin and taught surgery and forensic medicine at the Richmond Hospital. He cofounded the Dublin Pathological Society in 1838 with Abraham Colles, Sir Dominic Corrigan and William Stokes.[4] Robert Smith published on a wide variety of subjects, particularly the pathology of surgical diseases, congenital joint dislocations and neuroma. In his 1847 book A Treatise on Fractures in the Vicinity of Joints and on Certain Forms of Accidental and Congenital Dislocations he corrected Colles's description of the Colles' fracture, stating that: The situation of the fracture is not so high as Mr. Colles states it to be; I have never seen it more than an inch above the carpal end of the bone; in the majority of cases it is not so much. Smith also described his own eponymous fracture in the same chapter. In his Treatise on the Pathology, Diagnosis and Treatment of Neuroma[5] he described neurofibromatosis 33 years before von Recklinghausen.[6] References1. ^{{cite book |last1=Smith |first1=Robert William |title= A Treatise on Fractures in the Vicinity of Joints and on Certain Forms of Accidental and Congenital Dislocations |year=1847 |publisher=Hodges & Smith |location=Dublin}} {{Authority control}}{{DEFAULTSORT:Smith, Robert William}}2. ^{{cite journal |author=PELTIER LF |title=Eponymic fractures: Robert William Smith and Smith's fracture |journal=Surgery |volume=45 |issue=6 |pages=1035–42 |date=June 1959 |pmid=13659347 |doi= |url= }} 3. ^History of surgery at Trinity College, Dublin 4. ^{{WhoNamedIt|doctor|1928|Robert William Smith}} 5. ^{{cite book |last1=Smith |first1=Robert William |title=A Treatise on the Pathology, Diagnosis and Treatment of Neuroma |year=1849 |publisher=Hodges & Smith |location=Dublin}} 6. ^{{cite book |last1=Peltier |first1=Leonard F |title=Fractures: a history and iconography of their treatment |edition=illustrated |year=1990 |publisher=Norman Publishing |isbn=978-0-930405-16-8 |pages=43 |chapter=The Literature of Fractures}} 6 : 1807 births|1873 deaths|Irish surgeons|Irish pathologists|People from Dublin (city)|Alumni of Trinity College Dublin |
