Rolling Hills Preparatory School (RHP) is a private school located in the city of San Pedro, California.

Founded in 1981, the school has approximately 350 students enrolled in grades 6 through 12.

The Head of Schools is David Maher.

Rolling Hills Prep's campus also houses its sister school Renaissance School of the Arts and Sciences, with 150 students enrolled in grades 5 through 12.[1]

History

The school opened in 1981 as the high school division of the Rolling Hills Country Day School. The school's first class of seven students graduated in 1985.[2] From 1981 to 1991, RHP classes were held at Rolling Hills Covenant Church. In 1992 the school added middle school levels and moved to the Malaga Cove School campus in Palos Verdes Estates.[2][3] In 1996 the school's board of trustees decided that Rolling Hills Prep should have a permanent campus, and the board searched potential sites across the South Bay region. In early 1998 the school submitted a "notice of interest" for a portion of the former Palos Verdes Naval Housing Site, which became available after the closure of the Long Beach Naval Shipyard. 54 other organizations also submitted notices of interest. On February 6, 2007 the school moved to its permanent site.[2]

Extra-curricular activities

Students of both schools are offered to take electives as a class, including, but not limited to, Speech and Debate, Mixed Media, Voice, Theatre, Horticulture, Photo, Art, and more.

Even with a small school population, school clubs are still important and popular, with clubs ranging from National Honor Society, Interact Club, Cakes for Causes, Travel Club, Conspiracy Club, Diversity Club, Gay Straight Alliance, Karaoke Club, Fem Union, Surf Club, Skate Club, Ukulele Club, Chess Club, Fitness Club, Coalition of Athletes and Performers, Lunch Club, Media Club, Student Council, karaoke Club, Disability Awareness Club, Student Council, Philosophy Club, Hip-Hop Club, and Yell Crew.[4]

Students have access to basic sport games, such as volleyball, basketball, soccer, tennis, golf, sailing, football, softball, and baseball. Rolling Hills Prep and Renaissance School's Softball team has won the Division 7 Championship for the past 2 consecutive years.[5]
