Mark Kerr (or Ker), 1st Earl of Lothian (1553{{snd}}8 April 1609) was a Scottish nobleman and politician. He was the son of Mark Kerr, abbot of Newbattle Abbey, Midlothian, and Helen Leslie, sister of the Earl of Rothes. Kerr was Vicar of Linton in 1567. He was appointed Master of Requests in 1577, made a baron and Privy Counsellor in 1587, and created a Lord of Parliament as Lord Newbattle in 1591. Like his father, Mark Kerr was an Extraordinary Lord of Session under king James VI.[1] He acted as interim Lord Chancellor of Scotland in 1604. He was created Earl of Lothian in 1606, and resigned the office of Master of Requests in the same year. An English list of the Scottish nobility states his residences were "Morphele" and Prestongrange. His wife was a sister of Lord Herries.[2] References1. ^{{EB1911|inline=y|wstitle=Lothian, Earls and Marquesses of|volume=17|page=18}} 2. ^Rogers, Charles, Estimate of the Scottish Nobility, Grampian Club (1873), 71, (1 July 1592) also printed by PF Tytler, CSP Scotland etc., https://archive.org/stream/estimateofscotti00gram#page/70/mode/2up See also:
