}}Ryan Matthew Serhant (born July 2, 1984)[1][2] is an American real estate broker, author, and television personality. He currently stars on Bravo’s television series Million Dollar Listing New York and its spin-off Sell it Like Serhant.[3][4] Based in New York, Serhant leads The Serhant Team,[5] a real estate group that consistently ranks as the number one team in New York and among top five teams nationwide with sales totaling over half a billion dollars in 2017.[6][7]

Early life and education

Born in Houston, Texas, Serhant was raised in Topsfield, Massachusetts, on the North Shore region of Boston, where he attended the exclusive Pingree School.[3][8][9][10] Serhant credits his father John Serhant, Vice Chairman of State Street Global Advisors for teaching him to work hard at a young age. One summer, under his fathers watch, Serhant and his younger brother Jack collected wood for $1.50 an hour which they, in turn, sold to neighbors as firewood. This first entrepreneurial experience taught him the value of hard work and earning a dollar.[8] Serhant spent most of his summers with his family in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, where he nurtured his interest in theater and arts, attending Perry-Mansfield Performing Arts School & Camp.[11] Later, he attended Hamilton College where he double majored in English Literature and Theatre and was a member of the Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity.[12] After graduating in 2006, he moved to New York City to launch his acting career.[8]

Career

Career beginnings

In 2007, after a year of participating in stock photo shoots to pay rent, Serhant landed his first role as Evan Walsh on the soap opera As the World Turns.[13] When his acting career slowed, he turned to hand modeling, posing for products including AT&T phones and Nespresso pods.[14] However, with little interest in hand modeling as a life-long career, at the urging of a friend, Serhant re-directed his efforts to real estate sales.

Real estate

In 2008, against the backdrop of the Lehman Brothers bankruptcy and the sub-prime mortgage industry collapse, Serhant ventured into the New York real estate market.[15] He initially earned his real estate license as a means of supporting himself while auditioning for acting roles in lieu of bartending.[16][15] During his first year, he worked hard to solicit new real estate business in a host of creative ways, including distributing flyers which declared himself the number one broker in New York City[13] and approaching shoppers well-endowed with purchases on the streets of NYC.[15] Despite his best efforts, during his first year in real estate, he earned just $9,000.[13] However, rather than call it quits, he redoubled his efforts, and after a year-long pursuit, hundreds of calls, and a “nearly failed” trip to Paris, he closed his first major sale of $8.5 million.[13] By 2012, The Real Deal had ranked Serhant #15 out of the 100 most successful agents in New York.[13]

Hired at Nest Seekers International in 2008, Serhant quickly “rose through the ranks,” becoming Executive Vice President and Managing Director in short order.[17][18] In 2012, he launched his bi-coastal brokerage team, The Serhant Team, which consists of over 60 professionals in New York City, New Jersey, Los Angeles, Miami, and the Hamptons.[5] His team specializes in high-end residential condo and co-op sales, homes, new development sales, site acquisitions, and investment sales across all price points.[5]

Ryan and his team are known for implementing creative strategies to close deals. Their past strategies have included hiring a marching band to showcase the effectiveness of an apartments' double-pane windows,[19] staging a magic show and coining a new NYC neighborhood - SoHY,[20] and even throwing an 80’s themed party complete with a DeLorean parked outside to enhance the nostalgia of a home’s decor.[21] As a closing gift following a $17 million condo sale on the Upper East Side, Serhant once had a custom wooden dollhouse worth $2000 made for the client’s nine-year-old daughter.[22] Recent Serhant Team deals include the sale of Ellie Tahari’s Astor Place property for $15.5 million,[23] over 100 units at 550 Vanderbilt,[24] and a $30 million sale at 152 Elizabeth Street to a venture capitalist at Benchmark Capital.[25]

The team has set price-per-square-foot sales records across Manhattan, Brooklyn and Long Island City and have a list-to-sale ratio of 94.5%.[26] In 2017, Serhant’s team closed $838 million in total Manhattan real estate, holding title to New York City’s Number 1 sales team in residential real estate.[27] In 2018, they were credited with the Wall Street Journal Real Trends #1 Ranked Sales Team in New York, #2 Wall Street Journal Real Trends Ranked Sales Team in America and The #1 Ranked Sales Team by The Real Deal magazine.[5]

Television

In 2010, following his success as sales director at 99 John Street at just 25 years old,[28] Serhant auditioned for the Million Dollar Listing New York (MDLNY) reality show and was cast as one of three real estate agents to be featured on the show.[13] The first episode of MDLNY aired on Bravo on March 7, 2012, and followed agents Ryan Serhant, Fredrik Eklund, and Michael Lorber across some of NYC’s most exclusive real estate deals.[29] Because the show is not scripted or staged, sales on the show are not always consummated, making for a real-world television experience.[30]

Serhant’s success on the show over the last seven years catapulted him into the upper echelon of New York real estate experts, and he frequently appears as an industry expert on national television programs including CNN, CNBC, FOX, NBC, ABC, and CBS.[5] In 2018, Serhant gave a keynote address at Agent 2021 with Gary Vaynerchuck[31] and he is regularly quoted in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Wall Street Journal China and Forbes.[5]

Since his debut on Million Dollar Listing, Ryan has also starred on Inside Amy Schumer, and in 2014, Ryan made his film debut, co-starring in Noah Baumbach’s 2014 film, While We're Young.[30] He also created, produced and starred in the real estate web series, Realty Byte with Ryan Serhant, accessible online on Spin Media’s Celebuzz platform.[32]

In 2017, Ryan produced and launched the Bravo television show [https://www.bravotv.com/sell-it-like-serhant Sell It Like Serhant], a spin-off of MDLNY in which he coaches under-performing salespeople, helping them improve their sales, and keep their jobs by learning new skills.[33] He is known for recommending improvisation classes to new sales associates to get them up-to-speed quickly.[13] Serhant also offers professional instructional events; in 2017, he sold out his first official Real Estate & Sales MasterClass in New York City[34] On August 1, 2018, Ryan launched an app [https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/agent-empire-nyc/id1364057685?mt=8 Agent Empire: NYC], which allows users to step inside the world of NYC real estate and test their skills as virtual sales agents.[35]

Books

On September 18, 2018, the week of his 10-year anniversary in real estate, Ryan debuted his first book, Sell It Like Serhant, How to Sell More, Earn More, and Become the Ultimate Sales Machine[36] which became a best-seller on the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and Los Angeles Times book lists.[37]

Social media presence

In 2017, after a decade of film and television experience, Serhant launched media and entertainment company, [https://www.serhantmediagroup.com Serhant Media Group] (SMG), and in 2018 he partnered with Joe Laresca of NOISE.[38] Serhant has an active social media presence, with hundreds of thousands of followers across Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter. He also runs a YouTube vlog, which provides glimpses into his hectic New York lifestyle, attracting over 235,000 monthly viewers.[39]

Personal life

On September 14, 2014, Serhant shut down Times Square and proposed to lawyer Emilia Bechrakis.[40] On July 7, 2016, the two married in Corfu, Greece, in a Greek church following Serhant's conversion to the Greek Orthodox Church.[41] A four-part mini-series, Million Dollar Listing New York: Ryan’s Wedding chronicled the event and aired on Bravo in fall of 2016.[42][43] The couple welcomed their daughter named Zena on February 26, 2019.[44]

Serhant holds a deep commitment to charitable giving, supporting various causes including Operation Smile, Feed the Children, Habitat for Humanity, GLAAD and the Make-a-Wish foundation. He is also passionate about giving back to the real estate community, often sharing his knowledge and tips for success through his many media endeavors.[45]
