Generally dated to 1605-1606, the painting is located in the Galleria Borghese in Rome. CompositionThe painting depicts Saint Jerome, a Doctor of the Church in Roman Catholicism and a popular subject for painting, even for Caravaggio, who produced other paintings of Jerome in Meditation and engaged in writing. In this image, Jerome is reading intently, an outstretched arm resting with quill. It has been suggested that Jerome is depicted in the act of translating the Vulgate.[1] HistoryThe painting is generally dated to 1605-1606, largely on the statements of 17th-century art historical biographer Gian Pietro Bellori, though Denis Mahon suggests 1602-1604.[2][3][4] According to Bellori, Caravaggio produced the piece at the behest of Cardinal Scipione Borghese,[5] who became a cardinal in 1605, but it is possible that Borghese acquired it later as it is not mentioned in a 1613 poem by Scipione Francucci that described the Borghese Caravaggio collection.[2] Whether or not the dating is accurate, the work is believed to have originated from Caravaggio's late Roman period,[6] which ended with the painter's exile to Malta in 1606.[7] That Saint Jerome Writing is the work of Caravaggio is sometimes brought into question, as it was attributed to Ribera in the Borghese inventories from 1700 until 1893.[3] References1. ^{{cite book|last=Bussagli|first=Marco|title=Italian Art|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=80DpE2Y-xlAC&pg=PA346|accessdate=28 June 2010|date=April 2009|publisher=Giunti Editore Firenze Italy|isbn=978-88-09-03726-7|page=346}} {{Caravaggio}}2. ^1 {{cite book|last=Gilbert|first=Creighton|title=Caravaggio and His Two Cardinals|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=7WSH4BabKuUC&pg=PA107|accessdate=28 June 2010|year=1995|publisher=Penn State Press|isbn=978-0-271-01312-1|pages=107–}} 3. ^1 {{cite book|last=Hibbard|first=Howard|title=Caravaggio|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=wAvz9G4DhdkC&pg=PA320|accessdate=28 June 2010|date=5 March 1985|publisher=Westview Press|isbn=978-0-06-430128-2|page=320}} 4. ^{{cite book|last1=Moreno|first1=Paolo|author2=Chiara Stefani|title=The Borghese Gallery|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=Ce2Fg7FIvFgC&pg=PA192|accessdate=28 June 2010|year=2000|publisher=Touring Editore|isbn=978-88-365-1946-0|page=192}} 5. ^{{cite book|last1=Bellori|first1=Giovanni Pietro|authorlink1=Giovanni Pietro Bellori|translator=Hellmut Wohl|title=The lives of the modern painters, sculptors and architects|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=Lm9gs8mXwOUC&pg=PA188|accessdate=28 June 2010|year=2005|publisher=Cambridge University Press|isbn=978-0-521-78187-9|page=188}} 6. ^{{cite book|last=Pomella|first=Andrea|title=Caravaggio: An Artist through Images|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=JDH4lOa8qRgC&pg=PA105|accessdate=28 June 2010|year=2005|publisher=ATS Italia Editrice|isbn=978-88-88536-62-0|page=105}} 7. ^Hibbard (1985), p. 206. 6 : 1600s paintings|Paintings by Caravaggio|Paintings in the Borghese Collection|Paintings of Saint Jerome|Books in art|Skulls in art |
