It is found in dryland gullies at {{convert|200|to|1800|m|ft|abbr=on}} elevation. S. cayanotropha grows up to {{convert|1.5|m|ft}} high, with shortly petiolate/ovate leaves that are {{convert|5|to|7|cm|in|abbr=on}} long and {{convert|2|to|2.5|cm|in|abbr=on}} wide.
