The plant grows at elevations of {{convert|2000|to|4300|m|ft|abbr=on}} in dry forests, often with Pinus wallichiana, typically growing in large colonies in woodland clearings. It is especially common in the Muktinath Valley, and is used in traditional Tibetan medicine.[1] The specific epithet nubicola means "dweller among the clouds," referring to its high mountain habitat.[2] For many years, it was considered the same plant as the similar European Salvia glutinosa (Sticky sage).[1] Salvia nubicola reaches {{convert|3|ft|m|abbr=on}} high and wide, growing upright, with fresh-green colored leaves that are triangular shaped, with the largest, approximately {{convert|5|in|cm|abbr=on}}, growing at the base of the plant. The petiole is typically about the same length as the leaf blade. The plant puts out numerous {{convert|10|in|cm|abbr=on}} long inflorescences holding pale yellow flowers, in whorls of two to six, that have finely spotted maroon markings on the upper lip.[2] The calyx is bright green, hairy, sticky, and glandular, giving off a medicinal odor when rubbed, described by one author as "resembling the distinct odour of a billy-goat," all of which cause animals to avoid it in its native habitat.[1]Notes1. ^1 2 {{cite book|last1=Kletter|first1=Christa|last2=Kriechbaum|first2=Monika|title=Tibetan Medicinal Plants|publisher=CRC Press|year=2001|pages=123–124|isbn=978-0-8493-0031-8|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=ODrIXj-48RsC&pg=PA124}} {{Taxonbar|from=Q1953850}}{{Lamiaceae-stub}}2. ^1 {{cite book|last1=Clebsch|first1=Betsy|last2=Barner|first2=Carol D.|title=The New Book of Salvias|publisher=Timber Press|year=2003|page=213|isbn=978-0-88192-560-9|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=NM0iwB8GrQYC&pg=PA213}} 5 : Salvia|Flora of Afghanistan|Flora of the Indian subcontinent|Tibetan medicine|Plants described in 1830 |
