It prefers the edges of pine forests, and is also found on limestone cliffs and banks and in cactus scrub habitats that are dry and exposed.[1]Salvia semiatrata reaches {{convert|6|ft|m|abbr=on}} high and {{convert|3|ft|m|abbr=on}} wide in the wild and in ideal garden conditions. The {{convert|1|in|cm|abbr=on}} deltoid leaves are a bright grassy green-yellow color, growing in small clusters even though they are opposite. The leaf surface is rugose, with the underside covered with short light cream-colored hairs that bring out the veining. The {{convert|6|in|cm|abbr=on}} inflorescences have whorls of one to three flowers in each verticil. The flowers are {{convert|1|to|2|in|cm|abbr=on}} long and bicolored—the upper lip is a luminous dark violet and covered with hairs, while the lower lip is a dusky lavender. The calyx is {{convert|.5|in|cm|abbr=on}} inches long and covered with hairs, and is a rich violet color with magenta. The specific epithet, semiatra, refers to the corolla tube and its two colors.[1] Notes1. ^1 {{cite book|last1=Clebsch|first1=Betsy|last2=Barner|first2=Carol D.|title=The New Book of Salvias|publisher=Timber Press|date=2003|page=265|isbn=978-0-88192-560-9|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=NM0iwB8GrQYC&pg=PA265}} {{Taxonbar|from=Q7406888}}{{Lamiaceae-stub}} 2 : Salvia|Flora of Mexico |
