An extremely versatile performer, Britton was equally at home playing in defence, midfield or attack.[2] Britton played for England in the 1995 FIFA Women's World Cup.[3] She dropped out of the side after the finals, but scored on her return two years later as England beat Scotland 4-0.[4] At the time she was playing for Cove Rangers in Scotland, but was looking for a move back to the English Premier League. She had previously played for Arsenal. Britton got her wish as she joined Croydon for 1997-98, featuring in the 3-2 FA Women's Cup final defeat to Arsenal.[5] She moved to Doncaster Belles the following season. In summer 2000 Britton played for IBV in Iceland, finishing as the club's top goalscorer with 12 goals in 14 games.[6] During qualifying for Euro 2001, Britton pre-empted the results of a random drugs test by admitting to smoking marajuana. She was subsequently banned for seven months by England coach Hope Powell and missed six Everton matches while attending a voluntary rehabilitation programme.[7][8] Britton was recalled to the England squad for the European Championship finals.[1] In March 2005 she was playing for Everton,[9] having re-joined from Leeds United in January 2003.[10] References1. ^1 {{cite web|url=http://www.rsssf.com/tablese/eur-women01det.html|title=European Women Championship 2001 - Final Tournament Details|publisher=RSSSF.com|accessdate=2010-11-14}} {{England Squad 1995 Women's World Cup}}{{England Squad 2001 UEFA Women's European Championship}}{{DEFAULTSORT:Britton, Sam}}2. ^{{cite news| title = England Women's player profiles| url = http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/in_depth/2001/womens_euro_2001/1388301.stm| publisher = BBC Sport| date = 2001-06-19| accessdate = 2010-05-30}} 3. ^{{cite web|url=https://www.fifa.com/worldfootball/statisticsandrecords/players/player=417/index.html|title=England-Samantha Britton|publisher=FIFA|accessdate=2011-02-15}} 4. ^{{cite news|url=https://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football-england-excel-as-coultard-joins-club-1247174.html|title=England excel as Coultard joins club|publisher=The Independent|date=1997-08-25|accessdate=2009-07-23 | location=London | first=Susan | last=Sweet}} 5. ^{{cite web|url=https://www.independent.co.uk/sport/womens-football-another-trophy-for-the-gunners-1161257.html|title=Women's Football: Another trophy for the Gunners|author=Adam Szreter|publisher=The Independent|accessdate=2010-11-15|date=1998-05-05}} 6. ^{{cite news|url=http://www.mbl.is/mm/gagnasafn/grein.html?grein_id=574073 |title=Grein - Samantha Britton rekin úr enska landsliðinu|publisher=MBL.is|date=2000-11-28|accessdate=2011-02-15|language=Icelandic}} 7. ^{{cite news|url=https://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/international/britton-survives-drug-shame-676074.html|title=Britton survives drug 'shame'|publisher=The Independent|date=2001-06-30|accessdate=2011-02-15|location=London|author=Pete Lansley}} 8. ^{{cite news|url=http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/1216502.stm|title=The highs and lows of Britton|publisher=BBC Sport|date=2001-03-12|accessdate=2011-02-15|location=London|author=Tony Leighton}} 9. ^{{cite news|url=https://www.theguardian.com/football/2005/mar/07/womensfootball.sport1|title=Cite revel in relegation win|publisher=The Guardian|date=2005-03-07|accessdate=2009-07-23 | location=London}} 10. ^{{cite news|url=https://www.theguardian.com/football/2003/feb/03/newsstory.sport1?INTCMP=SRCH|title=Women's Football|publisher=The Guardian|date=2003-02-03|accessdate=2011-02-15|location=London|author=Paula Cocozza}} 20 : 1973 births|Living people|English women's footballers|England women's international footballers|Arsenal Women F.C. players|Everton L.F.C. players|Leeds United L.F.C. players|Doncaster Rovers Belles L.F.C. players|Charlton Athletic L.F.C. players|FA Women's Premier League players|1995 FIFA Women's World Cup players|English expatriate footballers|English footballers|Expatriate women's footballers in Iceland|British expatriates in Iceland|Women's association football utility players|Bronte L.F.C. players|Women's association football defenders|Women's association football midfielders|Women's association football forwards |
