When the Spanish first heard the story in the 17th century, they thought it was a minotaur as the creature is depicted by the natives as half bull (male water buffalo) and half man. According to old folklore, Sarangays have a jewel or a precious gemstone in their ears that they are protecting. Those who try to steal it from them will be killed mercilessly. It was also said that when a Sarangay gets angry, its nose emits smoke.[1] In popular culture
