The New York City Police Department is the primary law enforcement and investigatory agency within the five boroughs of New York City as per the NYC Charter (law), which includes Sea Gate community. SGPD is privately funded by the Sea gate Home Association. HistoryThe Sea Gate Police Department dates back to 1800s when it was part of Municipal Police force. In 1857 New York State created the Metropolitan Police force which abolished all New York City Municipal police forces. In 1898 New York City expanded to include Brooklyn absorbing eighteen Metropolitan existing police departments. Sea Gate Police Department then continued as a public safety agency that has a uniformed force of 15 officers. Sea Gate is a private gated community that is less than one square mile in size, it has about 8000 residences, a nursing home, a lighthouse, houses of worship, a playground and a beach. Power and authoritySea Gate officers are New York State peace officers under NYS Criminal Procedure Law 2.10 subsection 46,{{cite web|url=http://codes.lp.findlaw.com/nycode/CPL/ONE/A/2/2.10|title=N.Y. CPL. LAW § 2.10 : NY Code - Section 2.10: Persons designated as peace officers|work=Findlaw}} They are authorized to make arrests, vehicle enforcement and issue summonses on Sea gate property only. They are licensed to carry a firearm while on duty after receiving a handgun permit by the New York City Police. They are also equipped with a baton, pepper spray, and handcuffs.
