A player with the Cavan inter-county team,[1][2] Johnston transferred to Kildare in 2012.Returning to the Cavan Senior Football panel in time For the 2016 Dr Mc Kenna Cup. Playing careerClubIn Cavan, Johnston played for the Cavan Gaels club,[3] with whom he won 7 Cavan Senior Football Championships in 2001, 03, 04, 05, 07, 08, 09, 11, 14 and 17. He also played with Dublin City University and helped them to win their first Sigerson Cup in 2006 and again in 2010. Inter-countyIn January 2012, Kieran McGeeney announced on Kfm that Johnston wanted to transfer to a Kildare club, to become eligible for the Kildare county team. Such transfers are restricted under Rules 6.1 and 6.9 of the GAA's Official Guide.[4][5] Johnston was granted his transfer in summer 2012, making a symbolic "cameo" appearance in a hurling match for Coill Dubh.[6] He struck back at criticism, asserting he wants to play football and live a quiet life in the country.[6] Martin Breheny later compared the fuss over Johnston's transfer with the lack of fuss over Ireland rugby out-half Jonathan Sexton's transfer abroad; Sexton left Ireland for Racing Métro of Paris.[7] On 15 July 2012, Johnston made his debut for Kildare in an All-Ireland Senior Football Championship qualifier against his native Cavan, coming on as a substitute late in the second half and scoring Kildare's final point of the match.[8] On 2 February 2013, he started his first major competitive game for Kildare against All-Ireland champions Donegal in the opening game of the 2013 National Football League.[9][10] References1. ^{{cite news|url=http://hoganstand.com/cavan/ArticleForm.aspx?ID=89333|title=Johnston pleased to be back in Cavan good books|work=Hogan Stand|date=12 February 2008|accessdate=30 January 2011}} {{DEFAULTSORT:Johnston, Seanie}}2. ^{{cite news|url=http://hoganstand.com/cavan/ArticleForm.aspx?ID=64248|title=Johnston goal seals Breffni win|work=Hogan Stand|date=26 July 2006|accessdate=30 January 2011}} 3. ^{{cite news|url=http://hoganstand.com/cavan/ArticleForm.aspx?ID=84420|title=Cavan Gaels manager praises Johnston|work=Hogan Stand|date=8 October 2007|accessdate=30 January 2011}} 4. ^{{cite news|url=http://www.rte.ie/sport/gaa/championship/2012/0124/johnstons_mcgeeneyk_kildare.html|title=McGeeney confirms Johnston wants transfer|work=RTÉ Sport|publisher=RTÉ|date=24 January 2012|accessdate=24 January 2012}} 5. ^{{cite news|first=Colm|last=Keys|url=http://www.independent.ie/sport/gaelic-football/residency-probe-puts-johnstons-lilies-move-in-doubt-3005742.html|title=Residency probe puts Johnston's Lilies move in doubt|newspaper=Irish Independent|publisher=Independent News & Media|date=1 February 2012|accessdate=1 February 2012}} 6. ^1 {{cite news|first=Daragh|last=O Conchuir|url=http://www.independent.ie/sport/gaelic-football/johnston-hits-back-at-criticism-of-cameo-with-coill-dubh-3154745.html|title=Johnston hits back at criticism of cameo with Coill Dubh|newspaper=Irish Independent|publisher=Independent News & Media|date=2 July 2012|accessdate=2 July 2012}} 7. ^{{cite news|first=Martin|last=Breheny|url=http://www.independent.ie/sport/gaelic-football/martin-breheny-amateur-johnston-vilified-yet-nobody-questions-loyalty-of-heroic-figure-sexton-3354673.html|title=Amateur Johnston vilified yet nobody questions loyalty of 'heroic figure' Sexton|newspaper=Irish Independent|publisher=Independent News & Media|date=16 January 2013|accessdate=16 January 2013}} 8. ^{{cite news|url=http://www.rte.ie/sport/gaa/football/2012/0715/329250-johnston-debuts-as-kildare-crush-cavan/|title=Cavan 1-09 Kildare 3-20|work=RTÉ Sport|publisher=RTÉ|date=16 July 2012|accessdate=16 July 2012}} 9. ^{{cite news|url=http://www.hoganstand.com/kildare/ArticleForm.aspx?ID=184803|title=Johnston starts for Kildare|work=Hogan Stand|date=1 February 2013|accessdate=1 February 2013}} 10. ^{{cite news|first=Cliona|last=Foley|url=http://www.independent.ie/sport/gaelic-football/johnstons-league-bow-a-big-boost-for-kildare-3375159.html|title=Johnston's league bow a big boost for Kildare|publisher=Independent News & Media|date=2 February 2013|accessdate=2 February 2013}} 7 : Year of birth missing (living people)|Living people|Cavan Gaels Gaelic footballers|Cavan inter-county Gaelic footballers|Kildare inter-county Gaelic footballers|Leinster inter-provincial Gaelic footballers|DCU Gaelic footballers |
