The inauguration marked the commencement of the second four-year term of Andrew Jackson as President and the only four-year term of Martin Van Buren as Vice President. Jackson was sworn in by Chief Justice John Marshall on a frigid day with snow still on the ground. This was the first inauguration for which two inaugural balls were held.[1] See also
