Malley Co., Macy's, and Grant's.[2] HistoryThe department store began as A. C. Wilcox, (later called A. C. Wilcox & Company) a dry goods store, in 1836.[3] After the death of A.C. Wilcox, it became The Howe & Stetson Co., and was greatly enlarged. In 1906, the business was purchased and became the Shartenberg-Robinson Department Store, and finally Shartenberg's Department Store.[4] The business was sold to Nelson Miller of New York in 1952[5] and closed its doors April 21, 1962.[6] The building was razed in either 1962[7] or 1964. The Shartenberg Site, as it came to be known, was used as a parking lot until 2008, when groundbreaking for the 31-story 360 State Street building commenced.[8][9] References1. ^Shartenberg's Department Store at Emporis.com 2. ^"Whose Downtown Is It?" at The New Haven Advocate, December 13, 2007 3. ^[https://books.google.com/books?id=160rAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA98&lpg=PA98&dq=A.+C.+Wilcox+new+haven&source=bl&ots=yX2iczNqAd&sig=oqhwYcO_754FHeaD6EjYRE_gTWA&hl=en&ei=LljCS9ufFMOclgeD893aBA&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=1&ved=0CAYQ6AEwAA#v=onepage&q=A.%20C.%20Wilcox%20new%20haven&f=false Illustrated popular biography of Connecticut] at [https://books.google.com/books Google Books], 1891 4. ^[https://books.google.com/books?ei=KSPCS-fgAp7WMMftqbAH&cd=1&dq=A%20modern%20history%20of%20New%20Haven%20and%20eastern%20New%20Haven%20County&q=shartenberg&id=WAsWAAAAYAAJ&output=text&pg=PA248 A Modern History of New Haven and Eastern New Haven County, Volume 1] at [https://books.google.com/books Google Books], 1934 5. ^Clustered stores and trolley riders at The New Haven Register, December 16, 2006 6. ^Today in History, Oct. 17 at The New Haven Register, October 17, 2003 7. ^Re-Imagined in New Haven - Developer Using Yesterday to Create Future at New York Construction, March 1, 2010 8. ^Impacts of Proposed Shartenberg Site Development at Knektid.com, February 24, 2008 9. ^Ground broken on State Street project at The New Haven Register, December 2, 2008 4 : 1906 establishments in Connecticut|1962 disestablishments in Connecticut|Defunct department stores of the United States|Buildings and structures in New Haven, Connecticut |
