Population: {{ru-census2010|49,449|;}} 46,566 (2002 Census);[8] {{su-census1989|39,783|.}} Combined with Nizhnevartovsk it is one of the most important industrial centres of oil producing. HistoryIt was first mentioned in 1810.[6] In 1961, the first oil in Western Siberia was struck there. On September 29, 1964, Megion was granted urban-type settlement status.[6] On July 23, 1980, it was elevated in status to that of a town.[7] Now the town is a center of the oil and natural gas industries.
