They were built for both passenger and freight service. They were ordered on 7 June 1961, the first entering service on 13 December 1963 at Chalindrey depot. All have now been withdrawn from service, with the exception of no. 68081. Some were converted from class 68500 by replacing the AGO engine with a Sulzer unit.
